Blackboard Tips
This page contains tips that will be helpful as you work in Blackboard. Click the headers below to learn more.
Make sure your files can be opened
When you submit a file to your instructor or classmates, you want to be sure they will be able to open it. Here are a couple tips to avoid problems opening your file.
Use Microsoft Office file types
All instructors will have access to Microsoft Office, as will most students. Be sure to save your files in a Microsoft Office format, such as PPTX (PowerPoint Presentation), DOCX (Word Document), XLSX (Excel Spreadsheet), etc. If you use an application suite other than Microsoft Office and do not save in a Microsoft Office format, there is a good chance your instructor and classmates will not be able to open your file. Most programs have an option on the Save As screen to change the file format:
Avoid using the number sign (#) in file names
Blackboard treats the number sign (#) as a special piece of code. When you save files that you intend to submit through Blackboard, avoid using the number sign in the file name. For example, instead of naming a file “Journal #1.docx“, name it “Journal 1.docx“. This will make sure Blackboard opens the file correctly.
Maintenance is the biggest difference between a great computer and a “paperweight” you want to toss out the window. By updating your computer regularly and using the maintenance tips below, you can enjoy a long, healthy relationship with your computer.
Update your computer
Over time, new versions of software get released. In order to keep your computer up-to-date, make sure you install these updates. If you use any of the programs below, click the corresponding link to update them:
- Java (automatically updated if you use a Mac)
- FireFox
- Internet Explorer
- Safari (automatically updated if you use a Mac)
Microsoft Windows users should also use Windows Automatic Updates. You can learn more about this here. Mac users should use Software Updates. Learn more about this here.
A note about Java: Java (sometimes confused with JavaScript) is an important part of Blackboard. Since it typically runs in the background, you may not always realize that you are using Java. Some of the most common tools in Blackboard that use Java are the Virtual Classroom, Chat, Elluminate Live, and the Discussion Board.
Keep your computer running smoothly
Problems caused by spyware, viruses, and a full hard drive can get in the way of classwork. You can eliminate most of these problems by following a few clean-up tips found here.
If a problem occurs with one of your browsers, it is good to have a back-up. Macs come with Safari pre-installed and Windows computers come with Internet Explorer. Firefox is a good browser that can be installed on any computer to give you two browsers to choose from. Download and install Firefox by going to http://www.getfirefox.com.
