Run a Virus Scan

AVG is Technology Services’ anti-virus/anti-spyware tool to combat unwanted software that can harm your computer. When AVG is running, the icon can be seen in the taskbar next to the clock.

When AVG is scanning, there will be a second AVG icon that looks like this. Scans occur on the regular maintenance schedule, if you initiate a scan, and when a USB drive is plugged into the computer.

Performing a manual scan with AVG

Technology Services helps prevent viruses and spyware/malware on your computer with a weekly scheduled every Monday at 12:00pm. If, however, you’d like to run an additional scan at another time, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Locate and double-click the AVG Antivirus icon in the Notification Area of the Task Bar.
  2. Once AVG Anti-Virus opens, go to Tools > Scan computer.
  3. AVG will complete the scan and will display a summary screen.

What to do if you have a Virus Notification:

First, if you receive a Virus Threat notification, stay calm. Call the Help Desk at x1234 or at 517-750-1234, and we will walk you through the cleaning process.

Automated scan with AVG

Computer running slowly? Check the date and time first. If today is Monday and it is shortly after noon, check the notification area on your task bar for the AVG scan icon. Your computer is most likely running its weekly Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware scan. While Technology Services has configured AVG to take the least amount of computer processing possible, the scan will likely still impact your computer’s performance.

We chose noon so that it will run when you’re likely to be at lunch. Unfortunately, this is a University-wide setting so it cannot be customized by individual desktop.
