Here is the winning story (with pictures) for the Help Desk Hard Drive Giveaway. Congratulations to Lauren Harder and thanks for sharing!

Why You Shouldn’t Buy Off-Brand Laptop Batteries:

So my story takes place a couple of years ago. My mom’s laptop was having problems with the power staying on, and we finally deduced the problem to the battery going bad and the power cord not staying in to keep the power going. So mom went onto the Dell Website to see what she needed to get. The battery she needed from them was really expensive, so she decided to go a cheaper route and order one from a different company that was made for that model of Dell computers. She placed the order and the battery came a few days later. She put the battery in and the computer worked!…but the story does not end here.

A couple of days later I came home from school and there was an awful smell in the house. It was an almost nauseating smell. So I went around the house- first checking the stove, then for any left-on curling irons. After not finding anything, I opened up all the windows in the house (it was in like February keep in mind) and hoped that the smell would go away soon. My boyfriend came over and commented on the smell and he did a second check through the house. No success in finding the source of the smell. My mom got home and first thing she did was say, “Lauren, what did you burn?” I said, “nothing, it’s smelled like that since I got home. I don’t know where the smell is coming from.” So mom just shrugged it off and sat down in her char. She reached for her computer only to find a melted computer…the computer had caught on fire while we were at school and had put a nice sized hole in our floor. We had just built our house a few years before that, and surprisingly enough, the house did NOT catch on fire, thanks to the carpet having flame resistant stuff on it, and the Grace of God.

Thankfully my mom was able to recover everything from the computer and insurance covered everything- new carpet, new padding for the carpet, and a new computer for mom.

This week, thousands of leaders are meeting in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss global issues in the Church. This event is the Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelism, also known as Cape Town 2010. Spring Arbor University is participating as one of 600 GlobaLinks in the conversation. To understand more about what these GlobaLinks do, we spoke with VP of Technology Services, Jeff Edwards:

Q: How do these 600 GlobaLinks aid in global participation at Cape Town 2010?

A: These Globalinks are hosting people from all over the world to experience Capetown 2010 at their location. Discussion questions are prepared and the conversation is held not only in Cape Town, but around the world. All sessions are recorded and available for download 5 hours after they are recorded. We have ours hosted on the arbor.edu/capetown2010 web site.

Q: What technological preparations did SAU have to undertake in order to participate as a GlobaLink?

A: We created our own web site and have loaded all of the video sessions to our youtube channel. The first two days are available for viewing now.

Q: Has participating in Cape Town 2010 equipped SAU to get involved with other global events in a similar capacity?

A: We are collaborating with The Free Methodist denomination and providing these videos to them for hosting at any of the churches world wide.

Come join us and experience CapeTown 2010:

Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in Whiteman-Gibbs room 110

The Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church is sponsoring a similar session on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m.

Each day this week, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., sessions will air in Fireside Lounge.

As a result of bad weather and a damaged transformer, Technology Services experienced two power outages this morning. Most services are now online, including email, Blackboard, MySAU, and www.arbor.edu. However, to complete repairs to the damaged transformer, our servers will need to be taken offline again at 8:00PM today (June 24th). This will result in all network services going offline, including email, Blackboard, MySAU, www.arbor.edu, Workspace, network storage, printing, CARS, Access databases, and on-campus Internet connections.

The power outage will begin at 8:00PM and services should start to return by 9:00PM. We apologize for any inconvenience this outage will cause and thank you for your patience. If you have any questions regarding this outage, please contact the Help Desk before 7:00PM today at 750-1234 (877-728-9880 for toll free calling) or helpdesk@arbor.edu.

Good News! Your student email address is now your name in the form: firstname.lastname@arbor.edu. Rather than being forced to remember your network username, anyone can e-mail you by your full name at your school account.

Soon you will receive an e-mail showing your new email address. The name is displayed from the name we have in our database for you. In some cases, where names are duplicates, a number will be added to the end of the last name to make it unique.

The e-mail address you’ve been using will continue to function just as it always has. The new address is simply an additional way people can contact you. Your new address does not replace your network username, which you will still need to log into SAU workstations and Internet resources like MySAU.
With the space upgrade last spring bringing all mailboxes to 200 MB and this new feature of a friendly address, it is my hope that you will have a better experience with your SAU e-mail than ever before. Enjoy!
