Finishing
The Office of Academic Technology is finishing 2008 strong. This month focused on the theme of community. Dr. Robert Moore-Jumonville shared his experiences of seeing community taking place by his students and his response to keep up with the need. He said it started online when he saw some students using YouTube as a visual discussion board. He knew then that he needed to jump in and catch up with their learning styles. It paid off.
OAT with Mojo
Dr. Moore-Jumonville consulted with OAT staff and helped him create a weekly video podcast for his students. After a brief overview, Dr. Moore-Jumonville was able to produce and author his own video podcasts in a matter of minutes. Using Podcast Producer, a workflow-generated rich media delivery system, he was able to not need any technical know-how and simply teach. He believes in the power of the visual so strongly, that now he is encouraged to use more tools and visuals in future classes in collaboration with OAT.
Students Janice Chilcote and Chadwick Walenga joined the presentation to provide perspective on how these types of tools are helping enhance their learning experience. Janice shared live in person while Chadwick shared live via Elluminate, a Web-based conferencing tool.
Randy Meredith, Director of Academic Technology, brought things together by casting vision for Blackboard Community, a new part of Blackboard, where institutions can leverage Blackboard in other contexts outside classroom and course management.
