Podcasting Toolkit

Podcasting is the process of creating an audio show of some sort available in MP3 format via an RSS 2.0 feed that supports enclosures. Podcasts are designed to include talk shows, tutorials, music, or other audio content.  At SAU, we record audio files and upload them to iTunes U.  We then connect the files through Blackboard to our courses and therefore, students.

Getting Started

To get started, you’ll need a microphone, software to record your podcast, and a place to edit and upload it when you are done recording.  SAU has a place for your files to “live” (iTunes U).  You just need a way to record your podcasts.  Below are two recommended packages to help you along the way.  You can always contact us for a consult on what to purchase and specific best practices for podcasting.

Basic Package

This basic desktop mic is the one we use to record podcasts and screencasts in the OAT Faculty lab.  They are around $20 and provide a good solid basic sound for speaking.  They’re USB, so they work on a Mac and PC.  Software is included but generally not needed.  The other advantage is you can buy this mic Online or at Wal Mart.  It’s very accessible.  Features include noise-cancellation technology for better voice recognition and superior speech recording.  Buy on Amazon

MobilePre USB is the preamp with a built-in audio interface that’s designed for laptop recording such as field recording and sampling expeditions. In fact, it’s one of the only completely bus-powered preamps available. (Of course, you can use it on the desktop as well). A total of three kinds of audio inputs and outputs provide maximum flexibility for any application, including two on-board microphone/instrument preamps and high-impedance instrument inputs ideal for connecting guitars and basses. And unlike many competitors, zero-latency direct monitoring provides you with a streamlined professional recording experience.  The MobilePre Preamp runs around $149 but is necessary when buying the M-Audio Nova mic.  Buy on Amazon
