How to find scholarly articles

We have recently created a couple step by step guides to finding scholarly articles in different databases.  A step by step guide for Ebsco databases.  Ebsco databases include ATLA Religion, CINAHL (Nursing), Communication and Mass Media Complete, Teacher Reference Center, Social Work Abstracts, and Communication Abstracts.

The other step by step guide is for ProQuest databases.  ProQuest databases include ABI/Inform, Hoover’s Company Records, Nursing & Allied Health Source, Biology Journals, ProQuest Computing, Education Journals, ProQuest Computing, ProQuest Health Management, ProQuest Military Collection, Psychology Journals, ProQuest Religion, Science Journals, and Social Science Journals.

New Proquest Databases!

The White Library has recently added a handful of new online databases.  The databases are from ProQuest.  View each of the individual databases below to see if one or two might be of help in your research this academic year.

Biology Journals (ProQuest) Search full-text journals in the life sciences.

Education Journals (ProQuest) Search the leading full-text journals in education and related fields.

Evidence-Based Resources from the Joanna Briggs Institute (ProQuest) Systematic Reviews, Evidence Summaries, and Best Practice Information Sheets for nursing and the allied health professions.

Health Management (ProQuest) Find complete, full-text information from leading publications covering all aspects of health administration, including public health and safety, hospitals, finance, personnel management, insurance, population studies, labor relations and law.

Nursing & Allied Health Source (ProQuest) Find complete, full-text information from leading nursing, allied health, and related publications. Designed to meet the needs of researchers at health-care facilities as well as students enrolled in nursing and allied health programs at academic institutions.

Psychology Journals (ProQuest) With complete full-text coverage from top psychology and related publications, this database meets the needs of both students and mental-health professionals.

ProQuest Computing Search top computing journals in full text for research on subjects such as database design, software development, web commerce, LANs, WANs, Intranets, and the Internet.

ProQuest Military Collection Search a comprehensive collection of material on military subjects such as defense, aeronautics and space flight, civil engineering, political science, and more.

ProQuest Newspapers The financial newspaper of record offering in-depth coverage of national and international finance as well as first rate coverage of hard news.

ProQuest Religion Search a comprehensive collection of journals covering religious issues and perspectives, including religious news and information, commentary on topics of general interest from the perspective of a particular religion, and formal theological studies.

Science Journals (ProQuest) Search full text and images for the leading periodicals in science and technology. Subject coverage includes computers, engineering, physics, telecommunications, and transportation.

Social Science Journals (ProQuest) Search full-text periodicals covering the social sciences.

Wall Street Journal (ProQuest) The financial newspaper of record offering in-depth coverage of national and international finance as well as first rate coverage of hard news.

PsychINFO (Proquest) Psychology and related fields since 1887. Some Full-Text.  Includes Access to PsycArticles , ProQuest Psychology Journals,  and ProQuest Social Science Journals.

Kids Count Data Center Access hundreds of measures of child well-being, including DataBook and The Right Start for America’s Newborns.

Teacher’s Domain A free digital media service for educational use from public broadcasting and its partners. You’ll find thousands of media resources, support materials, and tools for classroom lessons, individualized learning programs, and teacher professional learning communities.

Michigan Edu-Source

National Center for Educations Statistics Annual Reports Annual reports for The Condition of Education, The Digest of Education Statistics, High School Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States, Indicators of School Crime and Safety, and  Projections of Education Statistics.

K-12 Education Report Cards The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Center for American Progress, and Frederick M. Hess with the American Enterprise Institute have released a series of state-by-state K-12 report cards measuring issues on effectiveness (2007) and innovation (2009). Read below to learn more.

ATLA Religion (Ebsco) Religious and theological literature for students and faculty. Full-Text.

Christian Periodical Index (EBSCOhost)  provides access to articles and reviews written from an evangelical perspective or of interest to the evangelical community. The index includes more than 140 selected publications from a broad spectrum of knowledge — science, literature, medicine, music, philosophy, history, sociology, nursing, and education.

ProQuest Religion Search a comprehensive collection of journals covering religious issues and perspectives, including religious news and information, commentary on topics of general interest from the perspective of a particular religion, and formal theological studies.

JSTOR (JSTOR) Includes core journals in economics, history, political science, and sociology, as well as in other key fields in the humanities and social sciences. This collection also contains titles in ecology, mathematics, and statistics. Overall, there are 119 titles in twenty-one disciplines.

InfoTrac Diversity Studies Collection (Gale InfoTrac) A must-have for social science, history and liberal arts coursework, this collection explores cultural differences, contributions and influences in our global community.

InfoTrac Religion & Philosophy Collection (Gale InfoTrac) This custom collection provides coverage of different religions and philosophies and how they impact our daily lives.

American Religion Data Archive – Surveys and statistics on religious membership and attitudes in the U.S. and Canada.

BUBL – A catalogue of Internet resources, with links to many religion resources.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library – Full-text theological library which includes reference, fiction, non-fiction, and hymns in an assortment of formats.

The Pew Forum on Religious and Public Life – Research, news, and data related to US religion and politics; in particular, see the US Religious Landscape Survey.

Religion Data Resources – A web portal to census, social survey, and congregation data, maintained by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research.

Society of Biblical Literature – Nonprofit professional association for scholars in the field of biblical studies. Their Review of Biblical Literature is searchable from 1966 to the present, with full-text book reviews.

Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy – The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy was founded in 1995 as a non-profit organization to provide open access to detailed, scholarly information on key topics and philosophers in all areas of philosophy. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is another encyclopedia resource.

Philosophy Pages  – This site on philosophy and philosophers has a concise Dictionary of Philosophical Terms and Names, a survey History of Western Philosophy, a Timeline of Western Philosophers (from 600 B.C.E. to the present), a discussion of logic, a guide to the study of philosophy, and a collection of briefly annotated links to additional resources.

Philosophers Web Index – This site provides links to resources on the web on 188 philosophers and may be viewed through an alphabetical or timeline list.

Quodlibet Online Journal of Christian Theology and Philosophy – This free publication is designed primarily for articles which address theological and philosophical issues from a Christian perspective, and for articles from any perspective which deal critically with the theological and philosophical credentials of the Christian faith.

Voice of the Shuttle – Voice of the Shuttle provides a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources in various subjects, including philosophy.
