Building a Sacred Interiority

SAU small group of students meeting weekly with department chair, Paul Patton, form a support system and accountability structure for memorizing Bible texts. Each Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. the students share various verses that have stirred their soul. Patton notes that memorizing scripture is what the Psalmist described as “hiding the Word in one’s heart” (Psalm 119) and a formidable means of stewarding soul stirrings. The group is exploring the memorization of inspiring texts as a means of cultivating what Patton calls a “sacred interiority.”

The group will present some of the texts memorized by different participants at a showcase in the Prop Shop on Sunday night, December 11th at 8 p.m. For more information about the weekly meetings or to have Paul lead a workshop on the importance of “Stewarding the Stirrings of the Soul, contact him at ppatton@arbor.edu
